Karen Elkins - also known as Kate Tiler
My business began as a hobby almost 15 years ago, when I answered an advert to live as a Tudor... I took on another identity as Kate, rather than Karen, because Karen isn't a very Tudor name.
Over the years that I worked as a volunteer at Kentwell Hall in my holidays, I developed skills in Tudor cookery, singing, spinning wool and making shoes and costume. I fell in love with woodfired kilns while hanging around looking useful in the Kentwell Pottery and I taught myself how to make Medieval Tiles so that I would have a legitimate place at a firebox.
The effort involved in researching and making the tools that I needed to make tiles seemed well worth the reward of claiming a shed as a Tile workshop. (pictured left)
In the spring of 2002 I began to work as a Medieval Tile maker at events all over the country and I also started to put my art and design skills to use in schools.
In this website you will find examples of the many different areas of creative arts that I enjoy making and teaching, whether in costume as Kate Tiler, or as myself, Karen Elkins. I have a BA (Hons.) in Graphic Design and Illustration from Brighton Polytechnic, and a BTEC in Graphic Design from Medway College of Art and Design.
Please contact me for more details if you are interested in booking me for an event or school visit, or if you wish to commission my work. I am based in the East Midlands but the events I am booked for are as far apart as Barnstable in Devon and Bede's World in Jarrow, Newcastle.
